After-school and weekend activities

Here are a number of activities around town that many of our students have enjoyed.

UNM Children's Chorus / UNM Music Prep School UNM Children's Chorus is a non-audition chorus for children in grades K-12. They meet on Wednesday evenings during the Fall and Spring semesters, and put on two concerts a year. UNM Music Prep School offers children music lessons in Piano, Guitar, Ukulele and more. Also family music classes for families with young children.

Saturday afternoon Family Art at the Albuquerque Museum A 90 minute drop-in Art workshop for families. Saturdays at 1:00. Included with museum admission; all art materials provided.

Ninja Force Obstacle Gym Ninja Force Obstacle Gym offers a class Monday afternoons just for DWFS families. Kids run through ninja obstacles while working on their strength, balance, and coordination.

Stone Age Climbing Gym Stone Age Climbing Gym offers an Alternative P.E. Class for homeschooled students on Thursdays from 1-3pm.One of the instructors for this class is even a Family School alum!

Sol Forest School Sol Forest School holds Saturday sessions once a month in the beautiful outdoors near Cedar Crest (less than 15 minutes from the Tramway/I-40 exit). At Sol Forest School, children have a right to soulful play that allows for deep exploration and learning, managed risk, and thoughtful provocation provided by the adults in the environment.

Enchanted Equine Adventures Enchanted Equine Adventures' owner, Kendra Loring, introduces children of all ages to horsemanship. Her horses are gentle and she has helmets and saddles that fit young riders. She works with home-schoolers and girl scout troops.

Dovetail Community Workshop Dovetail Community Workshop offers classes and holiday events where children 6+ can work alongside their parents to learn basic woodworking skills. The owner, Erin O'Donnell, works with several Girl Scout troops.


Online resources for fun and learning

BrainPop Educational website with short animated movies for students in grades K-12, together with quizzes and related materials, covering the subjects of science, social studies, English, mathematics, engineering and technology, health, and arts and music. A lot of content is available free, although a subscription is required for the full site.

Khan Academy Free online courses, lessons and practice in Math, Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Computing and more.

Vocabulary.com Elementary and middle school word of the day vocabulary builder

Math-aids Dynamically created customizable math worksheets covering math topics from counting to complex numbers, including geometry, time, graphing, measurement, and logic

Science Kids Fun and easy science experiments to do with kids

K 12 Reader.com Printable English/Language Arts worksheets, covering topics including reading skills, grammar, vocabulary, and composition

Dance Mat Typing BBC's Dance Mat Typing, an entertaining way for kids to learning typing/keyboarding skills

Sadlier Conect Sadlier published the Mobius workbooks and has online resources associated with each book/chapter. Click on "Student and Family Resources" then "Progress in Mathematics" to find games, practice problems, problem of the day, and additional resources that are specific to the Mobius chapter your child is working on.
